The Leicester Line of the Grand Union Canal runs it course through the rolling hills and the unspoilt countryside of Leicestershire. Tunnels play a huge part on any canal boating holidays as almost every UK canal has a tunnel as part of its navigation. Opened in 1813, Husbands Bosworth canal tunnel is 1166 yards long and will take you over a quarter of an hour to navigate. The tunnel is close to the town of Market Bosworth and to the site of the Battle of Bosworth. For a real insight into this bloody battle visit the the Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre.
The Leicester Line of The Grand Union Canal forms part of the Leicester Ring and there are some pleasant canal side towns and villages to visit making this an interesting and varied route. The Leicester Ring consists of 101 locks, 154 miles of canal and river cruising and five tunnels. Not only does it take you through the Leicestershire countryside but also the counties of Staffordshire, Warwickshire and Derbyshire.
