The lift, built by Edwin Clark in 1875 was originally used to lift working narrowboats for fifty feet from the River Weaver to the Trent and Mersey Canal.

The route takes you to the edge of the Pennines and thorough the gentle rolling Cheshire countryside. It meanders thorough a mix of rural scenery, charming villages, bustling towns and industrial history straight into the cosmopolitan city centre canalscape of Manchester.
